Celebrated filmmakers and creative marketers from across the country came together to take a deep dive into the future of cinema at the second Jagran Cinema Summit held at the Taj Santacruz. Film Critic & Festival Director, Jagran Film Festival, Mayank Shekhar also announced the opening film for JFF- the much awaited, Lady Gaga’s A Star is Born.
The event began with a passionate session spearheaded by Mayank Shekhar with well renowned director Rohit Shetty who gave helpful pointers on ‘How to be the Audience’s BFF (Best Friend Forever),’ something most aspiring filmmakers strive to do. Abhishek Bachchan too attended summit as a guest speaker.
Several questions were asked to Junior AB, related to his recent film Manmarziyaan, his character in the film Robbie, his journey in the Hindi film industry, being Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan’s son, nepotism and more. During the chat, he revealed that after watching Manmarziyaan his wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan said to him that he is a very good actor.
However, the interesting part of the conversation was an old incident that Abhishek narrated. While it was shocking for the audience to learn about this, Abhishek chose to laugh off. He revealed that he was once slapped by someone outside a movie theatre in Mumbai after the screening of his then released film Shararat. It so happened that his film Shararat had released and he had gone to Gaiety Galaxy Theatres to gauge the audience’s reaction to the film. To his shock, a lady came up to him and slapped him
When this was posed to Abhishek at the summit, he confirmed the same and said,
Yes, it is true… Disgruntled customer I guess (laughs). It was a tough time.
This is not the first time Abhishek Bachchan had talked about it. In fact, back in 2011-2012, he himself had narrated this shocking incident in an episode of Yeh Hai Meri Kahaani, which aired on UTV Stars.
Here’s what he had narrated,
One moment I’ll never forget ki meri ek film release hui thi Shararat aur main Gaiety Galaxy (Bandra, Mumbai) gaya uske reactions dekhne ke liye. Ek lady thi woh picture dekh ke baahar nikli interval mein aur unhonein baahar aake, main concessions stand ka paas khada hua tha, aur unhonein mujhe baahar aake thappad maar diya, aur kaha ki, “You’re embarrassing your family’s name, stop acting”
(One moment I’ll never forget. My film ‘Shararat’ was released and I went to Gaiety Galaxy to check the audience reactions. There was a lady who came out after watching the film in interval and she saw that I was standing near concession stand. She came and slapped me. After that, she said that ‘you’re embarrassing your family’s name, stop acting’.)
Below is the video when Abhishek had spoken about this disrespectful acquaintance for the first time.
Some of the questions that remained unanswered after Abhishek Bachchan’s confession:
- Does Nepotism always help you?
- How easy is it to survive being children of successful parents?
- Will anyone question a man’s dignity?
- What if it was a star daughter? Would society have laughed off the physical humiliation on Abhishek like this?
- We talk of unequal pays in Bollywood, but is Society really Equal in its true sense?
