Anupam Kher Resigns Abruptly As Chairman of FTII

Gajendra Chauhan was appointed as the chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII)Β on 9th June 2015.

“Complete your education and then get involved in politics.”

This was the farewell message of Former Chairman for the students when he took an exit from FTII. Chauhan had faced lot of flak for being appointed in a position which he did not do justice to. He was also being accused by students of only getting the post because he was a BJP Leader. Students went on an indefinite strike for 139 days which forced Gajendra to resign in March 2017.

After a brief period of six months, veteran actor Anupam Kher’s name was suggested as the Chairman of the FTII. However, in an unexpected turn of events, just within a year, Kher abruptly decided to end his association as FTII chief today. As per a tweet posted on Anupam Kher’s account, he said it was a privilege and a great honour for him to be the Chairman of the prestigious FTII. He tendered his resignation to Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, citing ‘International Assignments’ which were keeping him pre occupied and thus did not allow him to devote much time to the institute.

Kher had officially written to the ministry to look out for an alternate candidate for the said post during his notice period.

In another tweet, the method actor thanked his staff, teachers and students of the FTII for their support and appreciation, during his tenure as the chairman.

Last week, Anupam wrapped up his movie, ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, an adaption of a book written by Sanjaya Baru on the life and office of Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Kher who has always been a huge Modi fan and a critic of the Congress, incidentally, praised Dr. Singh and even said “history won’t misjudge him.”

Kher’s resignation has raised several speculations whether it was voluntary or his praising MMS led to any animosity between him and the ruling government.

Kher was mocked by many who questioned his ‘nationalism‘, a word which has always been the dominant narrative of any BJP supporter.
