Indian National Congress stands up for common man – leads Bharat Bandh

Rising fuel prices, demonetisation, Rafale deal scam, GST Impact on traders and other critical issues have sparked the principal opposition party, Indian National Congress, to call for a nation wide Bandh on Monday, 10th September before the crucial general elections next year.

Rahul Gandhi, President of the Indian National Congress, kickstarted the party’s call for a National shutdown, demanding an immediate reduction of the central excise duty and excessive VAT in the states and bringing petrol and diesel under the ambit of GST. Rising fuel prices have certainly acted as a catalyst for the opposition to call for Bharat Bandh today. Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh too joined the Congress-led opposition parties supported Bandh protest against fuel price hike.

Rising fuel prices have acted as a spark for the Congress to attack the BJP in the current circumstances. Immediate reduction of central excise duty and excessive VAT in the states, bringing petrol and diesel under the ambit of GST are amongst some of the demands of the Opposition.
At Rajghat this morning

At Rajghat this morning, we witnessed a first joint political action by the Opposition in several months, in the form of Bharat Bandh to protest against the rising fuel prices as well as the fall in the value of the Rupee.

21 parties, including SP, BSP, TMC, DMK and RJD, as well as several chambers of commerce and traders’ bodies, have joined in its Bharat Bandh call. Amongst other leaders of Opposition, Sanjay Singh from Aam Aadmi Party joined the protest, stating that AAP will stand together with opposition whenever it comes to the interest of national issues.

Five Left Front parties have given a separate call for bandh over the hike in fuel prices, the problem of farmers and unemployment issues. The parties that are extending their support to Congress include Janata Dal (Secular) of HD Deve Gowda, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) of Raj Thackeray, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) of Lalu Prasad Yadav, HAM(S) of Jitna Ram Manjhi, Samajwadi Party of Akhilesh Yadav, Nationalist Congress Party of Sharad Pawar, Communist Party of India (Marxist), DMK of MK Stalin and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of Mayawati among others. Besides, a number of chambers of commerce and traders’ associations are also backing the Congress party to make the bandh a success.

While the Congress has announced Bandh for 6 hours starting from 9 am, the CPI(M) has called a 12 hours bandh starting from 6 am.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had confirmed that the party would take to the streets today to highlight loot done by BJP government through various taxes and scams.

He also said that the common people were being burdened by the brunt of the escalating prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas.
