Celebrity hairstylist Jawed Habib is the latest entrant in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Habib joined the party on Monday in New Delhi.
The popular name is considered amongst the best hairdressers in the world and currently has over 550 unisex hair salons across India and three globally. He joins the party right in the middle of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
After joining the saffron party, Jawed said:
“Till date, I was the guard of hair, but from now onwards I am the guard of this country.”
Adding further, he said:
“I am happy to join the BJP as I have seen the changes brought in the country by Prime Minister Modi in the last five years. I think nobody should be ashamed of their background, when the prime minister is proud to state that he was a ‘chaiwala’ then why should I be ashamed of calling myself a ‘nai’ (barber).”
It must be recalled that in September 2017, Hyderabad Police registered a case on Jawed Habib for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus through an advertisement in West Bengal, where he had depicted Hindu gods and goddesses in “a derogatory way”.
Acting on the complaint lodged by city-based advocate M Karuna Sagar, the police had then registered the case under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code against Habib.
The newspaper advertisement showed Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kartikeya getting their hair fixed, applying makeup, and counting money with Durga looking over them in a Jawed Habib salon along with the tag,
“Gods too visit JH salon.”
