At least six people have been killed and dozens injured after a footbridge collapsed near Mumbai’s CST station last evening.
The bridge collapsed at 7.30pm local time as commuters were entering Chhatrapati Shivaji station. According to media sources, more than 30 people have been injured.
Images from the scene show rescue workers attempting to move the rubble and treating injured passers-by.
While citizens were doing their best to help each other and comfort the injured, a highly insensitive comment came from Ms. Sanju Verma, a spokeswoman for governing party BJP, calling the incident a “natural calamity.”
In an interview with Times Now, Verma denied that a “governance deficit” was behind the accident, instead saying that
“A large part of the blame, for want of a better word, was on pedestrians”.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said he was “deeply anguished by the loss of lives”.
Deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to the foot overbridge accident in Mumbai. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Wishing that the injured recover at the earliest. The Maharashtra Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected.

However, social media was abuzz how Modi had mocked a bridge collapse in West Bengal calling it a message from God to save Bengal from the rule of Mamta Banerjee.
Ye act of fraud hai, Chunaaw ke time Bridge gira ki logon ko pata chale ki apne kaisi Sarkaar chalai hai.. esliye Bhagwan ne logon ko ye Sandesh veja hai ki aaj ye Bridge toota kal ye Pura Pradesh tod denge, pardesh ko ense bachao.. Modi after #MumbaiBridgeCollapse 🙏🏻 pic.twitter.com/3HXybKiyFz

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis said he was “pained” to hear about the incident. He has ordered a high-level inquiry and announced compensation to the families of those killed. He added that the injured will also be given compensation and all of their medical costs would be covered.
This is the 3rd bridge collapse in Mumbai in past two years :
- September 2017 Elphinstone Bridge Stampede
- July 2018 – Andheri Bridge Collapse
The opposition in Mumbai slammed BJP for not taking the responsibility but instead, blaming the people who work tirelessly and pay their taxes. They also attributed this incident to ‘murder’ and not an accident.
Don’t you blame Mumbaikars @Sanju_Verma_ they work tirelessly, pay their taxes and this is what they get, a crumbling infrastructure. This foot over bridge was audited only six months back, this collapse tantamounts to murder not an accident. #MumbaiBridgeCollapse https://t.co/H1OksgoD6O
