Nitin Gadkari faints; his claim of ‘gomutra’ curing diabetes fails

On Friday, Union minister Nitin Gadkari was attending a convocation ceremony at an Agriculture university in Ahmednagar’s Rahuri district, where he suddenly fainted on the dais.

As per the footage below, Gadkari was standing for the National Anthem, when his eyes started rolling and he went into an unconscious state after which he almost collapsed. Maharashtra governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, who was by Gadkari’s side, held him as the minister gradually lowered himself to his chair.

This incident has initiated a debate once again on the relevance of Gomutra (cow’s urine), since the Road Transport and Highways minister once said,

“I drink gomutra ark (potion) every day. My diabetes is cured now. I don’t have to take insulin any more. Earlier, sugar levels would be 120, 122, 124. Now it is under control.”

Initially, Gadkari, 61, blamed it on his low blood sugar levels where he acknowledged that he dad slight medical condition due to low sugar. He had also confirmed that he had been attended by doctors and was doing well.

Later, he clarified:

“I felt some suffocation at the event. The pandal was airtight. I was wearing the robes of the convocation ceremony; that is why there was less oxygen. That’s also why I fainted. My health is all right. (I have) no problem of blood pressure or sugar now.”

At Nagpur airport, Gadkari said:

“I had vertigo due to extreme heat and suffocation during the programme. My blood pressure and blood sugar are normal. Because of this incident, a lot party workers are worried but there is no need to worry. As per the doctor’s advice, I will be undergoing certain medical check-ups.”

Gadkari had undergone bariatric surgery in 2011, which itself lead to the remission of diabetes. Also, the doctors confirmed that there was no reliable evidence that a gomutra potion could help control diabetes.

“Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) is a rare but known complication — and hypoglycemia can cause people to faint.”

In 2015, Nitin Gadkari had strongly promoted an unusual use for urine. He had also advised the farmers to use urine to water their plants.

Promoting cow urine is a priority for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP’s ideological mentor. Madhya Pradesh-based promoters of medicines, producing using cow urine or gomutra had been hoping that the BJP government at the Centre will help their business.

Not only this, the RSS has also been promoting a soft drink, Gauloka Peya, made from cow urine, mixed with ingredients such as aloe vera and gooseberry, to fight diseases. Om Prakash, part of the RSS’s cow protection department, in 2009, said:

“Cow urine offers a cure for around 70 to 80 incurable diseases like diabetes. All are curable by cow urine.”
