BJP veteran’s LK Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi have been completely sidelined from the party, to the extent of not even giving them tickets to contest from their respective constituencies.
Now speculations are rife in Madhya Pradesh, that BJP high command could also eliminate the candidature of LS speaker Sumitra Mahajan this time. Although Indore goes to polls on May 19, it was a bit unusual for the BJP to not name her in the initial few lists of candidates.
Confusion over the eight-time MP’s candidature turned even murkier as reports suggested that during core committee meeting of the BJP in Indore, Mahajan had indeed made it clear that either she or Prime Minister Narendra Modi would contest from Indore, and a proposal to this regard was also sent to party high command.
The Indore Lok Sabha seat is being seen with enhanced interest this time as rumours are abuzz that former union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia could be the Congress candidate from the seat. It is also being speculated that BJP is waiting for the announcement of Congress candidate, as it is widely believed that BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya could be named from Indore once Scindia is officially announced as Congress candidate.
Amidst all the uncertainty, Vijayvargiya’s son Akash hinted that besides Mahajan, names of his father and mayor Malini Gaud are also in the contention. He was, however, quick to add that this time the election would be contested on PM Modi’s name only.
As reported by News 18, Congress state spokesperson Neelabh Shukla claimed that layoffs are underway in the BJP and the party seniors are no longer respected.
Indore is of one of the eight Lok Sabha seats in Malwa-Nimar region where the BJP and RSS have deep roots. A defeat on this seat would be a big blow and ultimately have many inferences.
It must be noted that Sumitra Mahajan has been accused of being one of the most biased Speakers in the lower house.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan was sharply criticised for her comment on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s political debut, which is seen by many as too partisan for a post that should be above politics.
“Priyanka is a good woman. But her appointment also shows Rahul has understood that he cannot do politics alone, so he asked his sister Priyanka to help him,” she told reporters in Indore.
The Congress continued its protests inside the Lok Sabha seeking the revocation of suspension of six MPs and vowing agitations until obliged. Stopping short of accusing Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan of bias and the government of dictatorship, the Congress said while the Chair let off BJP MP Anurag Thakur with a warning despite his act of filming House proceedings, she didn’t take a similarly kind view of six Congress MPs who wanted to debate mob lynching.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan was accused of bias by the Congress while conducting the business of the House.
Although similar allegations had been levelled indirectly by Opposition members over the past few days, this charge was explicit and direct.
Trouble started when food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal was allowed by the Speaker to make a statement on the Amethi food park that rebutted Rahul Gandhi’s accusation that the Narendra Modi government had scrapped the project out of political vendetta.
