Sanjeev Bhatt detained in 20 year old drug related case

Routine detention or Vendetta?

Sanjiv Bhatt

Former Gujarat IPS officer and well know Modi critic, Sanjiv Bhatt was taken into custody by Gujarat CID, following directives from the Gujarat High Court today.

Bhatt, along with six other people, including two former police officers, were arrested in a 1998 drug related case. Bhatt has been accused of falsely framing a lawyer in a criminal case.  In 1998, Sanjiv Bhatt was serving as the DCP of Banaskantha, when he was accused of trying framing a lawyer in a fake narcotics case.

However, it is interesting to note the timing of detaining Bhatt now in a 20 year old case. Parallels have been drawn in social media between former IPS officer’s detention with the criticism and sarcasm cracked by him against PM Modi.

Twitter was prompt to react to the news of Bhatt’s detention today:

In July this year, hours after the Supreme Court dismissed a plea of Bhatt’s wife Shweta challenging the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) decision to demolish an illegally constructed portion of their house, the civic body razed the structure immediately.

A 1988 Gujarat cadre IPS officer, Sanjiv Bhatt had locked horns with the then Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, over the 2002 post-Godhra riots. He was initially suspended from service and later terminated from Indian Police Service.
