After fabricating Amethi video, Smriti Irani left red faced as voters “call out her lies”

Union Minister Smriti Irani faced embarrassing moments during an election rally in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday.

The BJP leader was campaigning in Ashoknagar, 200 kms away from the state capital, Bhopal. She took a dig at the ruling state government, when she questioned if the voters had received a loan waiver as promised during the Assembly elections. While she would have anticipated a reply in negative, to her surprise, people in the gathering replied:

“Yes, the loans have been waived off.”

The crowd also repeated the same several times in affirmative:

“Yes, we have, Yes, we have.”

A video of the same was shared by the Madhya Pradesh Congress on Twitter which went viral. The official twitter handle captioned the video as :

“Now even the people have started calling out their lies.”

Rahul Gandhi, against whom Ms Irani is contesting from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi seat, has made farm loan waivers his big poll promise in the national election as well. Farmers’ distress has been a highlight of the Congress’s election campaign, with the party promising bringing a separate budget for farmers aimed at farm loan waivers and fairer prices for crops.

In another incident, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday had rejected Union Minister Smriti Irani’s allegations of booth capturing in Amethi by Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Talking to media, Venkateshwar Lu, CEO UP dubbed the allegations leveled by Smriti Irani as baseless. He quoted:

“Following the complaint, the sector officer, senior officials and even observers rushed to the booth and spoke to the polling agents of the political parties, other officials in the polling booth following which it was conclusively found that the charges in the video clip were fabricated.

Due to prima facie allegations in the clip, the presiding officer was summarily removed while the probe was going on.”

The District Magistrate (DM) of Amethi too had asserted that the polling process was completely peaceful.

A day before Amethi votes for Lok Sabha, another controversy had broken out with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP candidate Smriti Irani alleging that a man died here after being rejected treatment by a hospital associated with the Gandhi family for having an Ayushman Bharat card. The hospital denied the allegations as “baseless“.

SM Chaudhary, the director of the hospital, said,

“The claims in the tweet are baseless and politically-motivated. The deceased patient has been identified as Nanhe Lal (59), a resident of Sarraiyya village located in Musafirkhana area of the district. He was admitted  in a very serious condition on April 25 at 11.00 pm. The patient had consumed a lot of alcohol and as a result suffered liver failure.”

“The administration categorically stated that Nanhe Lal did not have any Ayushman Bharat card and that the hospital did not distinguish between patients based on Congress and BJP, and treat a patient as a patient only.”

Once again this incident had left Smriti Irani, BJP candidate from Amethi in an awkward situation.
