Star Sports To Launch Kannada and Telugu Regional Channels This Year

Star Sports is expanding its broadcast wings to the south of India.

The group will be including two new regional channels this year, while many more will follow in the coming years later. Star will introduce Star Sports 1 Kannada and Star Sports 1 Telugu, while the addition to the Star Sports 1 Hindi and Star Sports 1 Tamil will be launched by end of the year. This announcement was made public as Star India published the list of maximum retail price for individual channels and also other different set of channels.

After losing the cases in Madras High Court and the Supreme Court, broadcaster was compelled to has publish the MRP and bouquet rates of its channels.

The MRP of Star Sports 1 Telugu and Star Sports 1 Kannada is pegged at Rs. 19 each while Star Gold Thrills and Star Gold Thrills HD have been priced at Rs. 1 each.

The focus will be on regional content in Star’s India Business strategy. Star India MD affirmed that launching Star Sports 1 Tamil was the first major step towards that direction. The broadcaster which own almost every single Sports Rights in India, had experimented with the IPL (Indian Premier League) broadcasts in regional languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali as there were no dedicated channels for the same.

The happened to taste huge success with the southern belt with Star Sports 1 Tamil, Kannada and Telugu.According to Broadcast Audience Research Council data (BARC), the regional content had contributed approximately 22% of the total 1.4 billion IPL audience this year. Star is also working on launching other regional channels in Bengali to cater to the eastern market, Marathi and Malayalam.

Star Sports Network which was earlier ESPN Star Sports, currently operates 25 television networks and 3 sports networks throughout Asia, broadcasting in 5 languages (English, Hindi, Cantonese, Mandarin and Korean). The network covers almost all local as well as international sporting events, commanding absolute majority amongst channels.
