Self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim was granted bail on Friday by Panchkula Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in the castration case against him. However, this was one of the cases he is facing and will remain in jail in connection with the rape case of disciples.
Panchkula CBI court has framed the chargesheet against the self-styled godman and he has been booked under a number of sections under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The bail granted to him pertains to the castration case where it was found that the Dera Saccha Sauda chief had forcibly castrated 400 of his followers at the sect’s headquarters in Sirsa, Haryana. Apart from Gurmeet Ram Rahim, two doctors have also been charged in the case as they were instrumental in the forcible castration of hundreds of men.
Gurmeet had earlier moved court but was denied bail on 23rd August by the CBI special judicial magistrate. He later had then moved an application challenging the order to special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh. The convict is however, serving a 20-year jail sentence for the rape of two of his disciples.
Last year after his arrest in August, his colossal business empire, worth an estimated Rs. 2,100 crore and spread over 800 acres, had come to a virtual standstill. Its manufacturing plants — for aloe vera products, bottled water, car batteries, confectionery, oil-seed expellers, and atta (flour) — were also shut down. The nearby newspaper office, resort, shopping mall, cinema, petrol pump, restaurant, and hotel were all closed.
With Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s ignominious downfall, Punjab Police had then said, that they have one less thing to worry about. According to sources, many Sikh youth were getting radicalised with the sole aim of targeting him for his alleged blasphemy against Sikhism.
Honeypreet Insan, the “adopted daughter” of jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, was questioned well into the night at a police station in Haryana’s Panchkula after her arrest in October 2017. Sources say she was questioned till 3 am on the charges against her, which include sedition and rioting.
