UP Man Commits Suicide As His Wife Refuses To Fast On #KarvaChauth

Karva Chauth 2018

The moon was expected to rise at 7.55 pm in New Delhi and Agra, Uttar Pradesh yesterday marking the culmination of the festival of Karva Chauth 2018.

The festival is celebrated by observing fast by many married women to pray for the long life of their husbands. This is a tradition that has been followed since years and also started getting a bit commercialised since Bollywood started picturising songs and film sequences on the same.

The tradition is something married women choose to do and should not be forced to do as it is largely a belief and not science.

Despite this, a report has come from Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district on Saturday where a 21-year-old Deep Chand allegedly committed suicide after his wife refused to observe Karva Chauth fast on Saturday. He was recently married just four months ago.

As per the police report no suicide note was found but indicated that the suicide was indeed due to the fight between the couple over fasting.

Deep was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in his house in Maghera village under Jait police outpost limits. The police added that husband had insisted on the wife to fast, being their first karva chauth after marriage, however, the woman refused to do so on account of poor health. She also found support from her mother-in-law for not keeping herself starving as she was unwell.

However, Deep was firm on his stand and reportedly locked himself in a room, where he hung himself in the morning. Later, his wife raised an alarm but by the time the room could be opened, it was too late to save Deep. Police later sent Chand’s body for autopsy.

This festival celebrated by Hindu married women, falls on the fourth day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar.

But should this be forced upon married women or it should be a free choice whether to continue with this age old tradition? The medium of keeping the husband healthy and happy in all practical ways should not be enforced.

Times have changed, women are demanding equality and many men too came forward yesterday to support their wives by fasting themselves as an extension to this tradition.

And this on a lighter note….
