Haryana has become synonymous as the land of rapes. Yet again, a new incident of a merciless gangrape of a 19-year-old girl has been reported on Wednesday.

A college student who was rewarded by the President after she topped the CBSE board exam was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by a group of men in Haryana. She was allegedly raped till she fell unconscious, and later dumped at a bus stand.

The second-year student was on her way to a coaching centre near her village in Rewari when three young men, who came in a car, allegedly kidnapped her and dragged her to a field, where they raped her, as reported by NDTV.

The police informed that a few other men who were already at the field also took turns to rape her. The girl mentioned that all the men are from her village.

The girl’s parents have alleged the police initially refused to take their complaint and file a First Information Report or FIR. As per their statement to the media, they had been running from one police station to another, hoping to file a complaint, after the accused threatened them.

“My daughter was rewarded by Modi ji after she topped the CBSE board exams. Modi ji says ‘beti padhobeti bacho‘, but how? I want justice for my daughter. Police have taken no action yet,” the woman’s mother told news agency ANI.

A police officer, however, claimed a “zero FIR” was filed against the accused based on the woman’s complaint. A zero FIR is filed in a police station which is not in charge of the area where the crime took place, and can be transferred to the relevant police station.

The police said the zero FIR was converted into a regular FIR this morning after it was successfully transferred to the police station under whose area of watch the crime took place.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had infact chosen the state of Haryana when he had launched his pet project “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” programme in Panipat in 2015.

Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar too had announced his decision on Twitter in July 2015, of signing a Bollywood face for the campaign

“We welcome @ParineetiChopra as the brand ambassador for the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme, to promote the cause of the girl child.”

Parineeti was chosen for the campaign as she hails from Ambala. A mega event will be held in Gurgaon on July 21 to give the campaign a push.

However, one fails to hear any of the Bollywood star campaigners voicing their concern on the rapes. Has Modi’s “Beti Padhao Beti Bachao” initiative worked on ground or it purely remains a cradlesong slogan?
